History of Craps

For anyone who has ever played and enjoyed craps, they might want to know a little bit about the history of craps. The history of craps is actually quite interesting (as indeed is the history of other gambling games). Craps is a dice based gambling games and indeed dice have traditionally been known as the oldest and most long standing gambling tools that have been used. So any game that uses dice probably goes back quite a while. You can trace the use of dice back as far as Roman Emperors Augustin, Nero and Caligula! And yet today, fast forward to the 21st century, and you will see dice being just as popular as all those years ago.

If you search on the Internet you can indeed find a very interesting history of the use of dice in gambling games, but what about specifically, the history of craps? well, while the use of dice traces back many thousands of years, the history of craps is much more modern, probably only about a century! Apparently, craps emerged from an English game called “Hazard” which it has been said was played by soldiers during the 12th century at the time of the 3rd Crusade, being played by Western European kings no less! But most people believe that Hazard was probably developed a lot earlier than the crusades. Indeed maybe the first English settlers who arrived in America on the Mayflower ship brought it with them.

So if you want to learn more about the history of craps, your best “bet” is to learn about the game Hazard and its history. Hazard gained popularity in New Orleans as far back as 1800 and the French referred to the game as craps, so that was probably the beginning of the history of craps. following that, rules and variations to the game changed frequently and there were easier and faster ways of playing the original Hazard that likewise gained increasing popularity among folk. At the end of the 19th century, probably the most popular game was known as “Table Off Game” and at this time players were only able to bet with the dice against the house. The game was still in its basic format.

It was only when John H. Winn came in to the craps picture that the game was modernized and made more popular amongst casino players as he enabled players to bet on either right or wrong and also, at the same time, improved the layout with his “Don’t Pass” bets. Finally, in 1931 when casino gambling became legal in the state of Nevada, did casino craps in Las Vegas style really hit the gambling world and became famous and popular not just in America, but throughout the entire world.

It was (and still is) a most fun game and players are always trying to figure out new ways of beating the house. Over time an abundance of betting and progressive systems for the game of craps were developed, to make it in to what it is today. Crapshooters (experienced players of craps as they are known) are still desperately trying to control the die so that they can win and not get “crap.”
